Unconditional Surrender is a fragrance inspired by Ulysses S. Grant. After a heroic performance in the Mexican-American War, Grant slipped into a depression and drank his way out of the army. He returned to Saint Louis, struggling to find his place in life. After a few failed attempts to make a living, including selling firewood on a corner, Grant spent time working in his family's tannery until he joined the Union army in the American Civil War.

Finding himself in a familiar role, Grant threw himself vigorously into his duty. One noteworthy performance that caught President Lincoln's eye was the capture of Fort Donelson from the Confederacy. When asked for his terms when negotiating the surrender, Grant demanded unconditional surrender. This helped win him the top spot in the armed forces, as well as a level of fame that caused admirers to send him thousands of cigars.

The scent of Unconditional Surrender is an homage to Grant's tenacity and will to fight back when he was at his lowest point. The scent notes are amber, tonka bean, amyris, cedarwood, agarwood, vetiver, cigar tobacco, black tea, jasmine and geranium.

BASE: Milksteak is my tongue-in-cheek name for the culmination of all of my soap crafting experience to date. While the name may be whimsical, it was an incredibly difficult decision to deprecate Bison and Icarus - one I would not make without full confidence that I was releasing not only the best soap base I have ever developed, but one of the finest soap bases ever created.

Over three years of customer feedback, research, theorycrafting and, of course, love, went into this soap base. I focused on ease of use (softer than Icarus), slickness, and post-shave - all the hallmarks of a great soap.

Customer review

I prefer the bison tallow version to the Icarus base for one simple reason. The Icarus base is too hard. The bision base is a lot softer so I can scrape out a bit, press it into the loading bowl and get a lather going very quickly. They both produce a fantastic lather with high shaving confidence however. I like the scent of this Unconditional Surrender. I can smell the tea and tobacco elements over a nice cologne base. The best thing is that there is zero irritation or reactions that I've gotten from various other soaps. I get bad reactions to sandalwood and almond soaps... I've tried 40+ soaps and DG has the best post-shave feel.
