A shaving scuttle was developed around the 19th century; the first patent for a shaving mug is dated 1867. As hot water was not common in many households, one way to provide hot lather was to use a scuttle or mug. A traditional scuttle resembles a teapot . Hot water is poured into spout and sits under the lather bowl portion thus allowing the heat from the hot water to warm up the lather in the bowl.

Bowl is glazed in a high-gloss finish.  Colors will vary from bowl to bowl.

Each scuttle features ridges on the sides to expedite the lathering process.

A small plastic funnel and rubber stopper are included.

The inner diameter of the bowl measures at approximately 4.25" across and 2.25" deep. The spout opening is 7/16" diameter.

These bowls are not available for international shipping.

These do not qualify for free USA shipping unfortunately due to size, shipping costs may vary depending on location.

Well made shaving scuttle - a bit too small for a Simpson Chubby3

I have used this shaving scuttle a couple of times since purchasing it. The scuttle is well made and looks nice as well. Using it is very simple - fill the outer bowl with hot water and let it sit for a few minutes, rinse it out and refill with hot water and then add the cream or soap into the inner bowl and using a shaving brush, whisk up a nice warm lather. All of that works well when using a Simpson Chubby 2 or smaller brush - think of Muhle Classic or Parker. However when I tried using my Simpson Chubby 3 or Kent #12, the inner bowl proved to be too small to use - I was constantly clanking the handle of the brush on the side and was afraid that I would either crack the handle of the shaving brush or the scuttle itself. Perhaps what Maggard should do is to offer this scuttle in two sizes, one a regular size and the other a much larger size (2 inches wider) to enable one to use larger shaving brushes. Afraid I will need to get a larger scuttle to allow me to use some of my shaving brushes.

A Practical Scuttle

I like this scuttle. It is small enough to fit on a loaded shave den counter. It keeps the brush and lather warm throughout the shave with an extra filling. The bowl can handle even a big brush. The small spout, however, proves inconvenient for filling and emptying hot water from the tank. A slightly wider spout should help. Still, this is a scuttle worth having. Good price, too.

Great bowl for a hot shave

The bowl itself is large enough to hold quite a bit of lather, and the ridges and bumps inside the bowl also help build the lather very quickly. Adding hot water to the scuttle makes for a really relaxing shave. My only gripe is that there isn’t a small hole on the opposite side of the spout to let air escape when you’re dumping it out. Might do that myself though.
