good performance for a great price

I was given a Pure Badger 18mm for Christmas 2019, and it's never really floated my boat. It works ok, but you can't soak it otherwise it goes limp. So, when I saw the reviews for this brush, I figured that at the bare minimum, I've got a travel brush for my dop kit. I have a bowl for making lather for home use. First up was TOBS. The lather is much more uniform with this brush. The badger always has a certain amount of dish soap bubbles. Second shave was with Noble Otter, and the results were the same. I have Jack Black Supreme Cream in the Dop, so I tested that. I do face lathering since this is in the travel kit. This brush works as well as the badger. I haven't tried lathering it in the bowl. I do face lathering. Why only 4 stars? When I wet it, little gaps appear in the knot. It probably doesn't affect anything, but it was unexpected.

Off to a good start

I was given a Simpson Special Pure badger for Christmas a couple years ago, and I just never really warmed up to it. There were always dish soap bubbles in the lather. So, pass 1 was to use TOBS. It lathered up with nothing but tiny bubbles. It's a little soft, but that's just technique and water. Second pass was Noble Otter Lonestar, again results that blow the pure badger out of the water. I'm not sure why but this morning when I used Jack Black Supreme Cream I just didn't get the lather I expected. The other 2 get a shaving bowl, but this one is a face lather. It may just be I have to make a couple adjustments.

This is easily the best synthetic brush I have tried. The backbone is perfect. It feels like a dream on the face. It loads a ton of lather easily and has surpassed most of my Simpsons best badgers in the rotation. My Simpsons Emperor in super still (barely) beats this brush, but was 10 times the price.

Sorry, but this brush has a very bad quality. Hard glue bump, can't recommend this brush to anyone. Imho the other maggard synthetic brushes are much better!

Another winning brush design from Maggard's! The "tuxedo" is called such because of the intermingled black and white bristles. The black is supposed to offer backbone and the white softness. The idea is to offer a compromise between soft but mushy Plisson style brushes and firm but overly springy black fiber Rytmo imitation brushes. The compromise works in this case. The b&w Maggards is much more structured than the Maggard black and tan Plisson styles, and is less likely to fling lather about than the Maggard black fiber. (The shorter loft on the b&w helps with that also.) I found the brush pleasant and easy to use, needing a wet down of about ten seconds before use, easily creating and loading lather for three pass (or more) shave, and being very easy to clean afterwards. The face feel was comfy yet also had perfect structure for face lathering. I own more expensive knots similar to this one, and can attest that this knot is perfectly comparable at a lower price point. 30mm is too big unless you are head shaving, 22mm a tad small for many faces, so 24mm is just about the perfect size. As might be expected from Maggard's. the knot was perfectly set and centered, and the handle, though basic, was attractive and well made with no visible defects and excellent ergonomics. This to me is the new must-have synthetic from Maggard's and I think this is the best option in their excellent line of synth brushes. If you absolutely need maximal softness, the Maggards black and tans may still be viable, but other than that, most looking for a cheap, good synth offering the best set of attributes can stop looking right here.
