Great brush that can work up a lather despite its diminutive size. Great travel brush because the synthetic knot dries quickly. Soft enough to face lather which is desirable in a travel brush as well.

Perfect for travel but I would not use it everyday. The tips are very soft and it has good backbone enough to have a very soft scrub but it doesn’t splay well and is obviously to small to comfortably hold.

I had been looking for a travel brush with certain characteristics (18-19mm synthetic knot, 35-40mm handle, and a 75-80mm overall height) for a few years, but was apparently looking in the wrong places. I was resigned to either having a custom brush made by an artisan or possibly even buying an Omega Mixed Midget, steaming out the knot, and setting my own synthetic knot. But, luckily, someone on a wet shaving forum pointed me to the "Maggard Razors 18mm Black Handle Timberwolf Synthetic Shaving Brush, Travel Size". Hallelujah! This exactly fit my needs! I took it on a recent overnight trip and it worked like a charm. It has plenty of backbone for such a small knot (probably due to the short loft), splays easily, has luxuriously soft tips. Water retention was excellent. Heat retention was surprisingly good for a synthetic. And, perhaps the most pleasing aspect of this brush is that it lathers like crazy. I normally do three passes and was thinking that such a small brush might need to be loaded repeatedly. I needn't have worried; lather explodes out of this thing like a geyser. I can't adequately express how happy I am with the performance of this little brush. If one is looking for a compact travel brush with a synthetic knot, then this could be the perfect fit.

Maggard Razors is to be applauded for offering such a small synth brush. I have searched for a long time and not come up with anything equivalent to it apart from the Simpson Classic 1 synth. For me, this is not a travel brush; I palm-lather, and as result tend to look for smaller knots to keep the lather on the palm during development. The knot, as measured from the top of the handle to the tips in my example, measured 20mm x 40mm. This is pretty much analogous to the Simpson Beaufort B1 with a scritchy pure badger knot. After a couple of test lathers, it would seem that this small Maggard synth can do all that the Beaufort can do, with softer tips, one caveat being that the respective knots as loaded (or not loaded) with water from the start behave quite differently. Both this Maggard synth and the Beaufort B1 being a little on the small side, I would encourage Maggard razors to introduce a slightly larger synth model along the lines of the Beaufort B2 pure badger, which has a 20mm x 46mm knot as measured from the top of the handle to the tips. This would involve a 20mm knot as measured from the base rather than the handle, so as to put in between the current brush being reviewed and the next Maggard synth brush size up, the 22mm black-and-white synth with black handle, by my reckoning.
