Scotsman Alexander Simpson started production of shaving brushes and male grooming ancillaries in 1919 and is widely regarded as a pioneer in the industry. Manufacturing was originally based in the East end of London but later in Clapham.

In 1941, following the loss of his factory during the World War II German Luftwaffe blitz, production was moved to the West Country at the famous Nimmer Mill. Today Simpson shaving brushes and associated products are manufactured by Progress Shaving Brush (Vulfix) Limited on the historic Isle of Man. They continue to be produced in the traditional way using hand tied knots by time served, skilled workers.

The Trafalgar is the latest offering from our new line of Alexander Simpson Est. 1919 shaving brushes. This superbly crafted & eye catching lathe turned handle is filled with our uniquely sourced Sovereign grade synthetic fiber.

This is the best brush I've ever used for face lathering! The directions in the box clearly state to use painting strokes with the brush and when you do, it seriously delivers! It easily picks up soap (I've used Cella and Pre de Provence) and it isn't stingy with the lather. Honestly, this thing neither looks nor performs like a twenty dollar brush. I have used boar, horse, badger, and a few other synthetics and I've never liked a brush like the Trafalgar T1. If you like smaller brushes, get this; if you prefer larger, get the T2 or T3.

Avoid the Simpson T1 if you face lather.! The splay is terrible. It has a tiny handle. It doesn't make good lather either. What a huge disappointment & a waste of money. !!! Any Maggard synthetic brush is far far better.

Customer review

I have had this brush for a week and used it for six shaves so far. I bought it from this great site, and service was fantastic as always. I have never touched any other Simpson brush, so I am not sure what the others are like, but based on price, I assume they are at the top of the heap. This is not priced as their other models, it is priced at a point I can afford, so I jumped on it. I am so glad I did. My preferences are smaller brushes with smaller handles. Before this I had daily been using Maggard's 18mm Timberwolf, and it is a great little brush. I was worried that this would be too large a knot at 23mm, but the shorter loft makes it just right for my needs. I face lather with Arko sticks, so it is not like I need a magical brush to make things work. But I will say that the Trafalgar T1 has made the creamiest and best Arko I can remember using over the past 5 years. I really love it. Has it shed some hairs? Yes, about 15-20, but none I noticed today. Not a big deal to me, as long as it does not resume. If the logo on the handle comes off, sure I will miss it, but I am used to $10-$15 Plissoft style brushes, I can live without a logo for the sake of this performance. This is a firmer knot that the normal Plissoft, but the loft being shorter is what makes the difference, a great difference. There is no bump at the bottom - hand tied or not I do not know, but splayable all the way down. I must say, this is what I think a cheap "Simpson" ought to be like. I am glad to own it, and I would buy another. In my opinion, it is a better knot that other synthetics I have owned and used, and I am very happy.
